Coverage in Missouri
Missouri'sautisminsurancelaw
Many Missouri health plans have to cover ABA. Here's the short version.
Which plans have to follow it
It applies to health plans issued or renewed on or after 1 Jan 2020 that are written in Missouri, or written elsewhere but covering Missouri residents.
Under the federal ERISA law, a self-funded private employer plan is generally not treated as insurance for state law purposes, so state mandates usually don't reach it.
What it covers, through age 18
The required ABA benefit runs through age 18. Coverage at 19 or older depends on the plan.
ABA coverage has a maximum benefit of $40,000 per calendar year for individuals through age 18, adjusted for inflation. A plan may pay more with prior approval when it is medically necessary.
For 2026, the adjusted maximum is $58,817.
Missouri recalculates the maximum every year. Insurers must update the figure they use at least once every three years, so your plan's limit may differ from this year's figure.
Deductibles, copays and coinsurance for this coverage can't be higher than for other physical health care, and coverage can't be denied because the care is educational or habilitative.
